Dr. Kesheng Shu is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Research group Climate Change and Security at University of Hamburg, Germany. He received his BSc in Geology at China University of Geosciences, Economics at Wuhan University, and completed his MSc in Regional Economics at Chongqing University of Business and Technology. His PhD research in Human Geography was hosted by University of Hamburg and the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In his PhD thesis, Dr. Shu focused on tailoring a sustainable development pathway for the bioenergy industry in China. To achieve this goal, he developed the Bioenergy Industry Decision Support System (BioDSS), using a mixed integer nonlinear programming approach. The model considers the interactions and two-way feedbacks between natural and human systems from the perspective of bioenergy, simulating the entire lifecycle of bioenergy from biomass cultivation, collection, transportation, conversion to bioenergy products distribution and by-products reuse.

Dr. Kesheng Shu is the Principal Investigator of the postdoctoral project “Bioenergy Landscapes in China: Blessing or Curse?” funded by the Center for a Sustainable University at University of Hamburg. He currently works on a holistic assessment of bioenergy industry in China to harmonize its economic, social and environmental benefits. In particular, the following two research directions are of his interests: the closed loop of bioenergy utilization and regional climate change, as well as the role of bioenergy within the transitional energy landscape in terms of rural-urban interactions.
