Dr. Jonathan Jiang, the Principle Research Scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology delivered a presentation entitled “Contrasting Effects on Deep Convective Clouds by Different Types of Aerosols” at Department of environmental sciences and engineering, Fudan University on November 3, 2018, upon the invitation by Prof. Cunkuan Bao and Associate Professor Ping Jiang. Dr. Jonathan Jiang is recognized internationally as a leading expert in satellite remote sensing, processes studies of pollution transport, aerosols, clouds, water vapor, and their climate impacts using satellite observations. He has authored and co-authored 167 peer-reviewed journal publications and book chapters. Dr. Jiang has twice received NASA Exceptional Achievement Medals in 2010 and in 2013 for his leadership and innovation in Earth and space science research using NASA satellite observations. Meanwhile, Dr. Jiang serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Earth and Space Science and Associate Editor of Journal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres.
In Dr. Jiang’s lecture, he explained the effects of aerosol type on deep convective clouds, as well as the mechanism of aerosol inhibiting or invigorating convection. The attendees had a heated discussion on the research of aerosol and the global climate change with Dr. Jiang. Serving as the Editor-in-Chief for the journal “Earth and Space Science, Dr. Jiang shared the experience on how to write a well-organized scientific paper and successfully publish in AGU journals. He encouraged the junior researchers to read as many research papers as possible and practice the writing skills to improve the academic capabilities from time to time. Finally, Dr. Jiang shared the keys for reviewing manuscripts and the secrets of how editors handle the review process.
This lecture was chaired by the associate professor Ping Jiang. The Associate Professor Dr. Xiaojiang Gao gave an opening speech. There were about 30 researchers and students in the lecture, including Professors CunKuan Bao and Tiantao Cheng.
