Dr.Frans Sengers (1984, Eindhoven, the Netherlands) obtained a BSc in Innovation Sciences (faculty of Technology Management) and a MSc in Sustainable Energy Technology (faculty of Mechanical Engineering) from the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. After his studies, he worked as a researcher on ‘smart grids’ and futures for the Dutch electricity distribution systems and traveled throughout Asia. In 2011, with his travels in Asia still fresh in mind, Frans started his PhD project about sustainable urban transport in Thailand and he defended his thesis successfully in 2016 at the Eindhoven University of Technology. He is now working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development at Utrecht University on the SMARTECO project, focusing on ‘smart cities’ and ‘eco-cities’ in Europe and China. The connecting theme running through Frans’ work is transformative change in urban contexts, especially in Asian cities. His research essentially explores how socio-technical experimentation, institutional change and path-dependent regimes in cities across the globe co-produce our urban future.
